ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Duda Paiva developed a dance technique in which an inanimate foam object becomes a real dance partner—a theatrical method of his own: Object Score.
The goal is to bring a fictional/poetic body to life; an alter ego, an extension of oneself, using the body as a landscape for the puppet and vice versa, in order to explore space and create choreographic motifs.
It is a very specific form of choreography for two bodies that function under the same mind.

Individuals with or without previous experience can register. The Object Score method is suitable for actors, dancers, puppeteers, singers, and circus performers, but the trainer will adapt the training to the level of experience of the group of participants.

DUDA PAIVA COMPANY
The Duda Paiva Company creates shows featuring dance and puppets. Associative, narrative performances—usually without text—that are staged in theaters, at festivals, and in indoor and outdoor venues in the Netherlands and internationally. Performances with which people of different backgrounds, ages, and preferences can identify.
DUDA PAIVA
Duda Paiva (Brazil, 1971), trained as a dancer and performer in Brazil, India, and Japan, has developed a recognizable signature as a theater creator: a manipulation technique he calls Object Score; the dialogue between the dancer and the puppet. Object Score is the basis of all his work and results from his research into an “egalitarian” interaction between a dancer and a “second” body, the puppet.
"As soon as a puppet enters the scene, it immediately captures attention. It can do whatever it wants. After all, no one judges a puppet when it deviates from the norm. A puppet has no ego. It simply exists. We, as humans, look at it and listen to its story. Without prejudice; a puppet is neutral in terms of gender, culture, religion, or sexual orientation. This quality makes it possible to address social issues in an accessible way."
This dialogue is purely physical and nonverbal. In recent years, Duda Paiva has collaborated with choreographers and musicians to explore this dialogue from multiple perspectives. This has resulted in musical productions such as The Fairy Queen (2019) and Matthäus Passion (2022) with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and The Miraculous Mandarin (2023) with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. And dance productions such as Sonatinas 4 feet (2020) with the Fractal Collective, Legends of the Roof (2022) with Class 3e, and Avatāra with the Illusionary Rockaz Company (2022–2023). For this production, they received the Swan Award for Most Impressive Performance.

Other collaborations include Reinaert de V. with Holland Opera & New European Ensemble (2023 and 2024) and Animalia Paradoxa with harpist Lavinia Meijer (2024). In 2024, Duda Paiva received the Wim Meilink Award for his career.
“I was inspired by hip-hop locking and popping, by the precision of the movements. If I could add anything to Object Score, it would be this form of dance. The dancer, so to speak, ‘borrows’ the stop-motion technique from a puppet, isolates it, and uses it to tell the story.”
Alongside these co-productions, Paiva continues to create solos such as Blind (2018) and Bruce Marie (2021), which are regularly performed around the world. He also successfully produces shows for families, such as Forgotten Creatures and Lost Things (2020) and Children of the Vanished Forest (2023).
He passes on his technique to new creators through workshops, mentoring programs, and as a director, both nationally and internationally. Thanks to the diversity of his work, Duda Paiva offers audiences aged 4 to 104 the opportunity to experience his work and technique.
