A NOITE DOS JUSTOS
CÃES DO MAR
SYNOPSIS
It is a show performed by two actors and a rock musician, based on accounts of the popular resistance movement Justiça da Noite (Justice of the Night), which emerged on Terceira Island in the early 20th century.
The movement was born as a reaction to the annexation of common land by the state and its appropriation by large landowners. During the night, hooded and armed with agricultural tools, the rebels tore down walls and fences, restoring access to common lands. Over time, Justiça da Noite became an alternative system for resolving disputes and, later, a form of moral and political policing.
The play unfolds through fragmented narratives and songs, united by a live rock soundtrack.
The play unfolds through fragmented narratives and songs, united by a live rock soundtrack. In addition to recreating a remarkable episode in Terceira's history, it reflects on contemporary themes such as social injustice, moral policing, extremism, and populism. The show resonates with international agrarian movements, such as Captain Swing in England and the Rebecca Riots in Wales. Rock music reinforces the connection between past and present, making the play accessible to different generations.

CÃES DO MAR
Cães do Mar (CdM) is a creative structure based on theater. Attentive to movements related to the environment, it has extended its scope to the performing arts and is now a multidisciplinary meeting place open to contemporary issues, being the first professional theater company in the Azores.
Based on identity, it draws on reality and reflection on the territory to give it breadth and universality. Its working method is research, from which it develops original texts and music for proposals that can fly and conquer the world.
It prioritizes community work and invests in new dramaturgy, with strong links to schools and institutions such as libraries, museums, and local authorities. To measure its impact, one must leave the picturesque Azores and enter one of the poorest and most isolated regions of Portugal, which is also the youngest and least densely populated.
The structure promotes an amateur theater group, Matilha, consistent with recreational practice, adding to it dramaturgical (technical) learning and relationships with similar structures (hosting, exchanges) inside and outside the region.
CdM is composed of a core team of five people and a larger group of eight, who implement activity plans focused on creation (14 new creations), training, and mediation, highlighting projects with schools and Rua Direita, the former with great human involvement and the latter with great media impact.
