SYNOPSIS

The show is based on Anton Chekhov's one-act plays, revealing, with irony and humor, the social universe of 19th-century Russia and the provincial figures that the author portrayed with such subtlety. These works, described by Zigerman as “vaudeville-esque,” are fundamental to understanding Chekhov's dramaturgy, which exposes the human condition through words—the center of his theater.

The staging by Rosa Coutinho Cabral and João Cabral offers a contemporary interpretation: a constellation of situations on stage, without rigid linearity, where words take on new meanings. Distancing itself from classical realism, the show emphasizes the presence of the actor and creates a dramaturgical game that brings Chekhov closer to today's audience. The aesthetic proposal is open and current, inviting us to revisit the author from new perspectives.

ABOUT THE COLETIVO POP

The POP Collective was born during the first edition of POP – Festival of Performing Arts and Crafts, in 2023, as a natural outcome of the creation of the show Ouço-te na sombra da praça vazia mas não sei de ti (I hear you in the shadow of the empty square but I don't know about you). The result of a collaborative process with the community of the island of São Miguel, the collective sees itself as a hybrid space, bringing together professionals and non-professionals from the performing arts, in an approach that values inclusion, tolerance, and active participation in the construction of common aesthetic objects.
